Mikhail Iogman on Teaching Children to Swim at the JCC Mommy or Daddy & Me swimming classes: your child’s first experience in the water
Parents will learn to experience the joy of swimming with their children. If parents come to the lesson carrying their own apprehensions about the water – tense, afraid and without a smile -- the children will catch on to this and begin crying. My task as an instructor is to teach parents and children to experience the joy together.
Each parent becomes a personal instructor for his or her child. As the instructor, I will ensure that parents are proficient and knowledgeable in the program. I will explain and lead the step-by-step process by which children will learn and gain comfort in the water.
If a child is afraid of a particular exercise, there is no need to force him to participate. The primary goal of the program is to ensure your child is smiling, happy and comfortable throughout the entire process. The exercises and drills are secondary to your child’s comfort and emotional well being.
During our Mommy or Daddy & Me class, we will sing songs and learn to move our arms and kick our legs in the water. We will learn to float comfortably on our stomach and back, blow bubbles, and navigate around the pool as a precursor to the doggy paddle – and later, freestyle. Teaching children to hold and move along the side of the pool reliably is the first step in developing water safety skills.
Benefits of multiple swimming lessons per week: children 18 months and older, who take two to three swimming lessons per week, will learn to swim four to six times faster than those only taking one lesson a week. This claim is substantiated if you recall your child learning to walk. Imagine that after taking his or her first step, your child was allowed to practice that skill for only half an hour a week. At that rate, it would be impossible to see him walking unassisted just three days later! For a complex skill such as swimming, the learning curve is the same. That is why I urge you to take as many as three lessons a week. This focused instruction will ensure that you will save time and money in the process. If, by the end of the session (provided regular class attendance), your child is not able to swim with a turtle-shell, unassisted, you will be permitted to attend the next session for free.
In the more than fifteen years that Mikhail Iogman has been a swimming instructor at the JCC, he has taught thousands of children how to swim. If you've never seen Mikhail in action, stop by the pool deck any Sunday morning and watch him work his magic with babies as young as six months of age. For more information on JCC swimming classes for children of all ages and abilities, please contact the Daniel Servelli, Director of Aquatics at 203.487.0990 email@example.com.
Early Childhood Group Swim Instruction
The JCC’s early childhood swim program focuses on water comfort and safety, while teaching basic swimming skills in a safe and supportive environment. In these innovative and fun-filled programs, parents are taught how to work safely in the water with their children.
Swim Assessment for New Swimmers For all children enrolling in a swim program for the first time, we strongly encourage you to bring your child for a free assessment. Our instructors will be able to advise you on the best class for your child based on his or her age and ability. Contact Aquatics Director, Daniel Servelli at 203.487.0990 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Swim Refund Policy Due to high demand and limited spots for swim lessons, the JCC refund policy will be strictly enforced. Refunds, credits or make-up classes for unscheduled absences cannot be accommodated. For absences due to serious illness/injury (doctor’s note required) or absences known at least one week in advance, we will make every effort to schedule make-up classes. Placement in make-up classes is based on the schedule of comparable classes and their availability.

Swim School at the J! Ages 3 – 5 Where young children get a head start on swimming, gain confidence in the water and begin working on basic swimming skills, while interacting with an instructor and other children in a fun and safe environment. The JCC is excited to be entering the second semester of our all-new swim school. Through our comprehensive curriculum children will learn skills, build knowledge, gain confidence and feel safe in and around water. Using a step-by-step approach to learning, students will build proficiency as they successfully progress through levels that teach the four essential strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Most importantly, the new curriculum is built in such a way that children will be excited to advance through each level. Every swimmer will receive a book in which he or she will be able to see the specific skills needed to progress to the next level. Swimmers will also be awarded a new color of swim cap as they progress through each level. Each semester ends with a free swim competition. See class listings following all class descriptions.
