Chess
Grades K – 5
Learn to play chess using strategies and maneuvers from a real champion, then take what you’ve learned and try to beat your opponents! Instructor: Alex Eydelman.

NEW! We Do Robots II
Grades K – 2
This class provides children with an introduction to simple robotics. Build and program dancing birds, drumming monkeys, hungry alligators, roaring lions and flapping birds. Using LEGO® WeDo robots, students will learn to build models, attach sensors and motors, and use a computer to program the models’ actions and behaviors. Perfect for beginners or those with some robotics experience. Students will not take the robots home.

Jazz/Ballet Combo*

This combo class focuses on dance technique through ballet, the foundation of all dance styles, as well as exploring the creative and intricate world of jazz dance. Class consists of a center floor warm up incorporating both ballet and jazz positions, across-the-floor, and learning and executing more challenging choreography. Students learn direction changes, balance, footwork, leaps and turns.

NEW! Broadway Dance
Grades 3 – 6
This class combines the dance styles of ballet, jazz, modern and even tap to tell a story as characters in a musical.  In this class we emphasize the importance of maintaining dance technique while trying to become a character. Students will develop muscular self-control and basic coordination and expression through traditional and nontraditional movements to create an original and fabulous dance experience.

Theatre Stars
Grades 3 – 5
An introduction to theatre where students learn how to create characters, establish setting, and build a scene through improvisation and storytelling. Students will learn to tell a story through tableaux, pantomime and dialogue. Students will know the basics of theatre, like stage directions, blocking, emotion, physicality, dramatic structure and collaboration. Students will utilize props and costumes to create original scenes and stories, while exploring their own imaginations.

Ages 7 – 10
Capoeira combines martial arts, dance, gymnastics and rhythm in a fun game and a great workout. Private lessons, alone or coupled with our group classes, are a great way to accelerate learning. These lessons offer a comfortable setting, so those new to the water can excel. Through an initial skills test, we can assess your ability and plan lessons around your specific needs to help you achieve your personal best. Lessons are 30 minutes and are sold in packages of 5 lessons. And we now offer 10-lesson packages as well. All prices are per person. Refund Policy
Due to high demand and limited spots for swim lessons, the JCC refund policy will be enforced strictly. Refunds, credits or make-up classes for unscheduled absences cannot be accommodated. For absences due to serious illness/injury (doctor’s note required) or absences known at least one week in advance, we will make every effort to schedule make-up classes. Placement in make-up classes is based on the schedule of comparable classes and their availability.

 

Swim Assessment for New Swimmers
For all children enrolling in a swim program for the first time, we strongly encourage you to bring your child for a free assessment. Our instructors will be able to advise you on the best class for your child based on his or her age and ability.

 

Level 1 – Angelfish (Exploration)
This course is designed for beginners and to help your child feel comfortable in the water. Children will learn to put their face in the water, float, kick and set the foundation for successful swimming.

 

Level 2 – Swordfish (Primary Skills)
Children already should be able to float (front and back) and put their heads under water. Swimmers will work on floating, gliding, flutter kick, turning over from front-to-back and back-to-front, freestyle, backstroke, retrieving objects and jumping into water over their heads.

 

Level 3 – Dolphin (Readiness)
Students already should be able to swim freestyle and backstroke. We will work more on those strokes with a focus on gliding and proper technique. Elementary backstroke, and retrieving objects, treading water will be covered.

 

Level 4 – Barracuda (Stroke Development)
Students should be fairly proficient at freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke. Students will work on rotary breathing, scissor kick, sidestroke, whip kick and breaststroke kick, rotary kick treading water with modified scissor kick, freestyle backstroke, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke.

Intramural Swim Clinic
6 – 16 years
Learn competition-style swimming to become faster and more efficient in your strokes and turns. Testing is required for children new to the program. Students must be able to swim two lengths of the pool, freestyle and backstroke. Children who are enrolled two days a week may qualify for Sunday sessions at no extra charge. Twice a week recommended, but once a week can be accommodated.

For more information or to schedule a free consultation, please call Alec Iogman at 203.569.3284. One-on-one, semiprivate & small- group tutoring gives children academic confidence and prepares them for standardized testing. Our tutors are certified teachers who will customize a curriculum that will build upon strengths and address weaknesses. Tutoring is available at the JCC or in your home.
