Speak up for Israel
Not sure what to say if someone bashes Israel? Learn the facts, ask the hard questions and know your answers. Israel gets a bad rap, especially on college campuses. Join an elite group of high school juniors and seniors and learn from experts in the field - AIPAC, CAMERA, Israel Action Network and StandWithUs - how to respond and take action. Learn chords, scales, theory and-best of all-learn to play your favorite songs! One-hour classes focus on providing a high level of instruction in a fun atmosphere. Guitars can be provided to students to use during their lessons. Rentals are available for practice at home.

NEW! Cartoon Plush Dolls
Grade 6
In this class, young artists will develop a cartoon character, create its comic book story and make their own collectible plush doll. During the program students will be designing, drawing, mask making and sewing. The projects will be both 2D and 3D. This class has been selling out and we are happy to offer our own weekly Comic Con at the Stamford JCC.

This class will make you stronger, faster, and more powerful, and make you feel better, by performing high-energy functional movements that are natural and safe.

Fitness Center Certification Course
This class is for all 13-year-olds who would like to use the JCC Fitness Center on their own. Etiquette, proper equipment usage, form, safety, and training guidelines will be covered. After completion of this class, teens will have unlimited access to the Fitness Center during non-peak hours. The Stamford JCC is committed to creating a place for teens to embark on a healthy lifestyle. We are offering teens in our community a special rate for personal training. Special rates are effective October 1, sessions expire 18 months from dates of purchase.

Performing Arts

 

NEW! Acting Out at The J
Grades 6 – 12
We are pleased to announce the Stamford JCC’s new teen theater program — Acting Out at The J. To kick off the new program, Acting Out at The J will be producing the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken deviously delicious sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Janice Chaikelson Steinberg, with musical direction by Jonathan Cahr. Performances will be on Thursday, March 28 and Sunday, March 31.

Acting Out at The J is open to any and all teens who are affiliated with one of our local Jewish institutions (schools, synagogues, community center, etc.). Auditions for the show will take place on Tuesday, January 8 and Wednesday, January 9, with callbacks on Thursday, January 10. Rehearsals generally will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays after 6 p.m. in order to accommodate other afterschool activities. Rehearsals will also be held on some Sundays, and an expanded schedule will be in effect during the last three weeks of rehearsals.

NEW! Boys’ Beginner Breaking
Grade 6
Introducing the wildly fun and entertaining style of Break Dance! In this class students will learn the basics of breaking, one of Hip-Hop’s most iconic and impressive dance styles. From the Top-Rock, to the Six-Step, students will learn the fundamental introductory skills that will build and condition their muscles, while exposing them to a different approach to floorwork.

Grade 6
Musical Theater is the perfect class for any student with a passion for singing, dancing and theater arts! Students will participate in performance-driven games and exercises that involve basic dancing and singing techniques, accompanied by tracks from their favorite movies and musicals. Students are inspired and challenged to untap their imagination and put their creativity to work.

Hip-Hop Grooves
Grade 6
Through age-appropriate popular music and dance moves, students will learn the basics of popping, locking, breaking and fusion styles. They will explore rhythm, syncopated movements, isolation and creative expression, as well as understanding the concept of performance. Students will learn set choreography and play games to fine-tune their improvisational skills.

Ballet
Grade 6
In this class students will begin to develop dance technique through ballet, the foundation of all dance styles. Class consists of a center floor warm-up incorporating ballet positions, across the floor, and learning and executing basic choreography. Students learn direction changes, balance, footwork and the start of jumping and turning.

Aquatics

Swim Assessment for New Swimmers 

For all children enrolling in a swim program for the first time, we strongly encourage you to bring your child for a free assessment. Our instructors will be able to advise you on the best class for your child based on his or her age and ability. Swim Refund Policy
Due to high demand and limited spots for swim lessons, the JCC refund policy will be strictly enforced. Refunds, credits or make-up classes for unscheduled absences cannot be accommodated. For absences due to serious illness/injury (doctor’s note required) or absences known at least one week in advance, we will make every effort to schedule make-up classes. Placement in make-up classes is based on the schedule of comparable classes and their availability.

Swim Cap Policy

Everyone entering the pool must wear a swim cap. This rule applies to males & females of all ages who have hair, no matter how long.

Pre-Swim-Team Program 
11 – 16 years
Two days per week is mandatory. Prices listed for two days per week include a discount.

Children enrolled two days a week are eligible for a 3rd practice, free of charge. Based on your child’s ability, he or she may be able to join the senior team and travel to swim competitions.

Level 2
11 – 16 years
Learn competition-style swimming to become faster and more efficient in your strokes and turns. Testing is required for children new to the program. Children who are enrolled two days a week may qualify for Sunday sessions at no extra charge.

Twice a week is MANDATORY. Based on your child’s ability he or she may be able to join the senior team and travel to swim competitions. A third practice for pre-team will be held on Sundays at 3 p.m. Please note: private lessons, group class or Sunday practice can be used for a mandatory second practice.

JCC Stingrays Competitive Swim Team 
IS AN OFFICIAL USA SWIM CLUB!
The JCC competes in the USA Swimming League. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 6 p.m. and optional practice on Saturday at 7.45 a.m. Children must try out for the team, and must have the following prerequisites:

• Level 4 – Barracuda (stroke development)
• Pre-Swim Team Classes*

JCC Stingrays Junior Competitive Swim Team is for those swimmers who want to begin participating on a swim team, but are not quite ready in skill or ability for Swim Team. Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m.

 


 

Private & Small Group Swim Lessons
Private lessons, alone or coupled with our group classes, are a great way to accelerate learning. These lessons offer a comfortable setting, so those new to the water can excel. Through an initial skills test, we can assess your child’s ability and plan lessons around his or her specific needs. Lessons are 30 minutes and are sold in packages of 10 lessons and 5 lessons.
