Our Philosophy

The SPBBL is designed to provide a positive sports experience. The primary purpose is to offer each participant the opportunity to pursue, through recreational basketball, the physical and emotional benefits of the sport. Our goal is for all players to have the opportunity to gain new skills, make new friends and have fun.

The emphasis is on good sportsmanship, proper conduct, and following the rules and policies of the SPBBL. Although competition is a natural part of sports activities, winning is not the primary goal. We want not only our participants, but also our coaches and fans, to play fairly and respect each other. Cheer for one’s triumphs and not for their shortcomings. Win with grace and lose with dignity. Encourage others always to do their best and try their hardest.

FAQs

Season
Teams practice one hour, one evening a week (Monday – Thursday) at either 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00 pm. They will also have one game per week. Game are 60 minutes and are held on Saturdays or Sundays.

Team Formation
In an effort to balance SPBBL teams, team formation is based on player ability (as provided from previous season assessments and/or during the player evaluation). For the benefit of all players, we strive to ensure balance among teams. Therefore, SPECIAL REQUESTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. We believe that no matter what team a child is placed on that he or she will have an opportunity to play in a fun and positive environment and hopefully to make new friends and learn new basketball skills along the way!

When Will I Get My Team Roster?
Participants should receive an email copy of the team roster, coach information and practice information after the player evaluations and by November 11. Once rosters are posted, player transfers/changes will only be approved in extenuating circumstances. Game times and locations will be posted on the SPYF website and should always be checked prior to each game. You can also get roster information by logging into our website then clicking on “SPBBL’, then select your division and team.

Uniforms & Equipment
Reversible SPBBL jerseys will be provided and distributed during your first team practice; yours to keep at the end of the season! Players will need to be dressed in their jersey at all games. Players are asked to bring a basketball to practice with their name CLEARLY marked on the basketball. The SPBBL is not responsible for lost or stolen balls. The SPBBL will provide all other equipment.

Game Schedules
Game schedules will be posted on the SPYF website at www.peaceyouthct.org as soon as they are available. Schedule updates or changes will be emailed and posted on the SPBBL homepage – so please check these sources each week for announcements or changes. Teams will play approximately 10 regular season games, plus playoffs. All teams make the playoffs which are single-elimination.

Coaches
All SPBBL coaches are volunteers. They are individuals who take their personal time to instruct and coach your child. Without their efforts, this program would not be possible. Please consider coaching and appreciate our coaches! Without them, we wouldn't have a program.

COACHES ARE NEEDED! The only way we can guarantee that each child will have a team is if parents volunteer to coach. Even if you cannot be the “head” coach, please consider volunteering to co-coach. Please contact us at info@peaceyouthct.org or 203-588-9020 if you are interested in coaching.

Team Parents
Every team needs a team parent. A team parent assists the coaches by helping with phone calls, coordinating after game refreshments and any event the team may want to have at the end of the season.

Inclement Weather
In the event of bad weather we will make a determination ASAP as to whether or not practices and/or games will be cancelled and/or rescheduled. Please note in some cases games can be rescheduled on the same day. Game and/or practice cancellations will be emailed and posted on our website so be sure to check these sources frequently in the event of potential bad weather.

Picture Day
Dates and times of picture days will be sent out by the main office. You will receive a packet/order form with all the details from your coach. Whether you are ordering individual pictures, or not, PLEASE have your child attend the photo session for the team picture. Pictures are special mementos of our experiences and if a teammate is missing, the memory is incomplete.

Cancellation Policy
In the event of a player cancellation, a full refund will be given to those that cancel their registration prior to the player evaluations on November 5. After this date, a processing fee of $25 will be retained by the SPBBL. There will also be a $10 credit card processing charge if applicable.

After the first game, refunds will NOT be awarded. Special cases must be approved by the Director of the League and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
